How to Visit the Cannstatter Volksfest: A Guide to Stuttgart’s Wasen

Every autumn, the Cannstatter Wasen fills with beer tents, carnival rides, and around four million visitors. With Dirndls, Lederhosen, and Maßkrüge, it looks like Stuttgart’s answer to Oktoberfest.

But the Cannstatter Volksfest has its own traditions and a different story behind it.

This guide covers when to go, how to choose and reserve a beer tent, what to eat, and what to see beyond the party.

What is the Cannstatter Volksfest?

The Cannstatter Volksfest is Stuttgart’s biggest annual festival. It’s held each fall for a little over two weeks in September and October in Bad Cannstatt.

Locals call it the Wasen, after the festival grounds where it takes place.

During Volksfest, the Wasen fills with beer tents, carnival rides, food stands, games, markets, and live music. In the daytime, the atmosphere is more relaxed. By evening, especially on weekends, the tents become much louder and more party-focused.

The Cannstatter Volksfest is one of Germany’s largest folk festivals.

When to visit: Volksfest events and the best days to go

You can visit on any festival day and get the classic Wasen experience. But several recurring traditions are worth knowing about before choosing your date.

Opening Friday: the Fassanstich

The Volksfest begins with the Fassanstich. Stuttgart’s mayor taps the first keg and opens the festival.

The ceremony takes place inside one of the large festival tents. The specific tent and timing can change from year to year.

Consider opening day for the excitement of being there when the festival begins. But the ceremony itself is less accessible than the public events that follow.

First Sunday: the Volksfest parade

If you want to see the traditional side of the Wasen, this is the day I would consider first.

The Volksfestumzug makes its way through Bad Cannstatt on the first Sunday of the fest. The parade fills the streets with traditional costumes, musicians, horses, and decorated wagons.

This is one of the strongest days to visit.

Family Days

Wednesdays are typically designated as Familientage. Participating rides and attractions reduce their prices. There is also special programming for children.

If you are visiting as a family, these are the days to consider.

Final Sunday: Music and Fireworks

The Volksfest ends with music and fireworks over the Wasen.

To experience the festival’s big finale, consider closing Sunday.

Every Four Years: The Landwirtschaftliches Hauptfest

Every four years, the Landwirtschaftliches Hauptfest (LWH) takes place alongside the Cannstatter Volksfest. The last LWH took place in 2026. The next one will be in 2030.

It is a large agricultural exhibition. There are livestock, demonstrations, regional producers, and exhibits focused on farming and food.

It also brings the Volksfest closer to its original purpose.

The festival that began on the Wasen in 1818 was an agricultural festival. The modern Volksfest grew around it.

If your visit falls during an LWH year, make time for both.

What to Do at the Cannstatter Volksfest

Once you arrive, don’t immediately disappear into a beer tent. The tents are part of the experience, but they are not the whole festival.

Walk the Festival Grounds

The Wasen feels surprisingly like an American state fair. Even more so when the Landwirtschaftliches Hauptfest is running. Except for the beer tents, Dirndls, and Lederhosen of course.

Modern thrill rides tower above older carnival attractions. Between them are food stands, games, children’s rides, beer gardens, and market stalls.

Even if you have no intention of riding anything, the sheer scale of the Wasen is worth experiencing.

Find the Fruchtsäule

A column decorated with fruit, grain, flowers, and vegetables stands amid the festival grounds. It’s a great meeting point. But the Fruchtsäule, fruit column, is also a symbol of the Cannstatter Volksfest.

Back of the Postcard: Why is there a giant column of fruit at the Wasen?

The Cannstatter Volksfest began after a famine.

In 1815, Mount Tambora erupted in what is now Indonesia. Dust and gas released into the atmosphere disrupted weather far beyond the island.

The following year became known as the Year Without a Summer. Cold, relentless rain, failed harvests, and rising food prices hit Württemberg hard.

Wilhelm I became king in 1816 with the kingdom still in crisis. He and Queen Katharina worked to improve farming and food production. And in 1818, the first agricultural festival was held at the Cannstatter Wasen.

The original festival had horse races, livestock competitions, and prizes for agricultural achievement.

At its center was a towering column decorated with the products of the harvest.

The Fruchtsäule still stands in the Wasen as a reminder of why people gathered here in the first place.

See the Wasen from above

Take a ride on the Ferris wheel for an overhead view of the festival grounds. It is also one of the best ways to appreciate how large the Wasen actually is.

Tip: If the weather is hot, like it was when I went, consider taking a ride. The cars are air-conditioned.

Shop at the Krämermarkt

The Krämermarkt is easy to overlook beside the giant rides and beer tents. The market stalls sell everything from clothing to jewelry, household items, and gifts.

It is a remnant of the older Volksfest tradition.

Experience a festival tent

You don’t need to spend your whole day inside a beer tent, but you should go in one.

Walking into one of the enormous tents is a major part of the Wasen experience.

The important thing to know is that the tents are not interchangeable.

Some lean toward party bands, DJs, singing, and dancing on benches. Others put more emphasis on a traditional festival atmosphere.

The same tent can feel completely different depending on when you visit. A tent at lunchtime and that same tent at 9 pm can feel like two different places.

How to choose a beer tent

The lineup, operators, programs, and menus change. Several long-running tents provide a useful starting point.

Göckelesmaier has been part of the Cannstatter Volksfest for more than 90 years. It has plenty of music and festival energy. If you want a tent with a strong connection to the traditional Wasen experience, this is a good place to start.

Zum Wasenwirt is much more about the party. Expect live party bands, DJs, singing, and a louder, high-energy atmosphere. If you want people standing on benches and singing together, consider this one.

SchwabenWelt is one of the big all-around festival tents. Its program combines food, beer, live entertainment, and the full Wasen experience.

These are not the only options. The Volksfest has eight large beer tents. Each has its own program, brewery, seating areas, and reservation system.

Before choosing, check:

  • The music program. Brass music over lunch and a party band at night create very different experiences.
  • The seating area. Some tents have smaller or quieter sections away from the main hall.
  • The time of day. Go earlier for food, conversation, and a more traditional atmosphere. Go later for singing, dancing, and the full party experience.

How to reserve a beer tent

There is no single reservation system for the Cannstatter Volksfest. Each festival tent handles its own bookings.

The best place to start is the official Cannstatter Volksfest website. Choose the tent that interests you and go to that operator’s reservation portal.

Reservation rules vary between tents. Depending on the tent, day, and seating area, you may need to reserve an entire table or a certain number of seats.

Reservations are especially useful for Friday and Saturday evenings and other busy periods.

Once a tent reaches capacity, it will stop admitting visitors. If you have a reservation, admission is guaranteed at your reserved time.

But if you visit earlier in the day or on a weekday, you may not need a reservation.

What to eat and drink at the Wasen

Eating is a big part of the festival experience.

You will find regional dishes alongside standard German festival food.

You don’t need to go into the tents to find good food. You’ll find plenty of options throughout the festival grounds.

Look for

  • In the tents: Göckele (rotisserie chicken), traditional dishes, Käsespätzle
  • Around the grounds: Langos, chocolate fruit, regional fare, classic carnival food

When we visited, we went to the SchwabenWelt tent. They had a full menu of hearty German meals. I had the day’s special, Sauerbraten with Spätzle and vegetables. The Göckele and giant pretzels were also popular. The portions were generous.

If you order beer in one of the tents, remember:

A Maß is one liter.

Plan accordingly.

Practical tips for visiting Volksfest

Getting to the Cannstatter Volksfest

Driving is possible, but traffic and parking can be difficult. Public transportation is the easiest way to reach the Wasen, and the smartest if you plan to drink a Maß of beer.

S-Bahn and regional trains serve Bad Cannstatt station. It is within easy walking distance of the festival grounds. The U11 Volksfest line also runs between Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof and the Wasen during the festival.

What to bring and what to leave at home

Travel light. Bags and backpacks larger than A4 size are not allowed on the Volksfest grounds. Entrance checks are in place. A4 is similar in size to a standard sheet of printer paper.

Bring a small bag, some cash, your phone, and a light layer if you’ll be staying into the evening.

Leave large backpacks, bottles, cans, and other drinks at home. If you arrive with an oversized bag, you may need to use luggage storage outside the festival grounds.

Cash or Card?

Bring both.

Don’t assume every ride, food stand, or vendor will accept cards. A little cash gives you more flexibility for smaller purchases. ATMs are available on the festival grounds if you need more.

Where to Stay for the Cannstatter Volksfest

If the Volksfest is the main reason for your trip, Bad Cannstatt is the most convenient place to stay. Look around Bad Cannstatt station or Wilhelmsplatz for easy access to the Wasen.

If you also want to explore Stuttgart, the city center near Hauptbahnhof is a good option. From here, you can easily catch public transportation to the festival.

If you’re coming from out of town, book early. The festival attracts millions of visitors each year.

Not visiting in Fall? Try the Stuttgarter Frühlingsfest

If you aren’t in Stuttgart during Volksfest, the Cannstatter Wasen comes back to life in spring.

The Stuttgarter Frühlingsfest happens each April and May. It has many of the same ingredients: large festival tents, rides, food stands, music, games, and a market.

It is a separate festival with a different history, so you won’t get traditions such as the Volksfest parade.

If you want the classic Wasen atmosphere in the Spring, it is an excellent alternative.

The 2027 Stuttgarter Frühlingsfest runs from April 17 to May 9.
